Why I switched
I am not a born planner girl.
I know there are women out there who have used the same system since high school, who color-code without thinking twice, who have never once torn a page in frustration. That has never been me. I'm becoming a planner person, slowly, one messy attempt at a time, and along the way I have run into pretty much every tab problem there is.
The sticky ones that ripped my page the second I tried to move them. The flexible plastic ones that bent and curled until they looked sad and crumpled. The ones where the ink smeared so badly within a few weeks that I couldn't even read what month it was anymore.
I didn't set out to make magnetic planner tabs because I had some grand business idea. I set out to find tabs that actually worked, for me, in my own planner, in my own real life. When I couldn't find them, I made them.
The Problem With Sticky Tabs
Sticky tabs feel like the obvious choice at first. They're everywhere, they're cheap, and they go on easily enough.
The trouble shows up later.
They don't move with you. The moment you switch planners, whether it's a new year, a new system, or just a fresh start, your sticky tabs stay behind. You either repurchase a whole new set or you live with the bare edges of last year's planner stuck to a fresh one.
They tear delicate pages. Try to reposition a sticky tab once it's placed, and you're often left with a torn corner or a sticky residue that never quite goes away. For planners with thinner paper, this is even worse.
The adhesive wears out. After a few months of flipping through your planner, sticky tabs start to lift at the edges. Eventually they fall off entirely, usually somewhere in your bag, never to be found again.
The Problem With Flexible Plastic Tabs
These solve the adhesive problem, but they bring their own headaches.
They bend, and once they bend, they stay bent. A planner gets tossed in a bag, sat on, shoved in a drawer. Plastic tabs don't bounce back. They just slowly become a little less useful and a little sadder looking every week.
The writing rubs off. Whether it's printed or handwritten, the ink on plastic tabs tends to smear or fade with regular handling. A few months in, you're left squinting at a tab that used to say "March" and now says nothing at all.
They're still permanent in their own way. Many flexible tabs are still adhered with sticky backing, which means you're back to the same transfer problem as before.
What Changed When I Switched to Magnetic
Magnetic planner tabs solve the actual problem, not just one piece of it.
They move with you. A magnetic tab clips onto the edge of your planner page and comes right off when you need it to. New planner, new year, new system? Your tabs come along for the ride.
They don't tear anything. Because there's no adhesive involved, there's nothing pulling at delicate paper. You can reposition, remove, and reuse without worrying about damage.
They hold their shape. A magnetic tab can get tossed in a bag all week and still look exactly the way it did when you first put it on. No bending, no curling, no sad crumpled edges.
They're sturdy enough to actually last. Instead of replacing tabs every few months, a well-made magnetic tab can move with you through planner after planner, year after year.

A Little Treat That Actually Works
What I love most about how this turned out is that it didn't have to be a choice between pretty and practical. I wanted tabs I'd actually enjoy looking at every time I opened my planner, and I wanted them to hold up to my actual, real life. Coffee spills, kids grabbing my planner off the counter, getting tossed in my bag on the way out the door.
Magnetic tabs do both. They're soft, colorful, and made with care, and they also just quietly do their job, week after week, planner after planner.
